+ EDITOR'S STATEMENT

For decades, DRUM has been the leading South African news magazine for black readers. In the 1950's, DRUM was a pioneer of black journalism bringing together courageous investigative journalism and cutting-edge photojournalism for Africa.

But DRUM isn't just about history. South Africa has changed a lot in the last 50 years, and DRUM has kept pace with these changes. Today it is a thoroughly modern magazine in touch with its readers. Our recipe for success is simple but effective: we give our readers what they want.

This means articles about real people, their joys and sorrows, coupled with escapism in the form of entertainment, glamour, sport and celebrity news. We pride ourselves on bringing readers the news behind the news - delivering stories they won't read anywhere else. Our aim is for DRUM to be an indispensable part of the majority of families in South Africa. That is why DRUM is full of practical advice on how to overcome everyday obstacles and challenges, ranging from health, careers, finance and relationships.

We also place a strong emphasis on education. Young DRUM was developed specifically as an essential aid for teachers, learners and parents, and the education theme is continued with the recent introduction of the Bluster and Tikolo comic strip. This incorporates a cut-out alphabet with a learning plan designed to teach youngsters to read.

It is an exceptionally good read for everyone in the household - the epitome of a what a family magazine should be.
